Bank Holiday Blues: Is Derbyshire Cursed With Classic Bank Holiday Weather?

As another bank holiday weekend rolls around in Derbyshire, many of us have spent the week enjoying glorious sunshine, warm evenings, and even the odd optimistic barbecue. But in true British fashion, just as we begin to plan our three-day escapes, out roll the clouds and down goes the temperature.

Yes, the forecast is in – and yes, you guessed it – the warm weather is set to fade just in time for the bank holiday. Cloudy skies, a chilly breeze, and the very real threat of a soggy picnic blanket are all on the cards for Derbyshire this weekend.

And just to add salt to the wound? The sun is due to return next week – just in time for the return to work and school.

Is this just Derbyshire’s fate?

Ask anyone from around here, and they’ll likely roll their eyes and mutter something about the “bank holiday curse.” For some reason, no matter how glorious the lead-up may be, the long weekend itself always seems to take a turn. It’s as if the Peak District summons the clouds on command.

Maybe it’s the price we pay for having such beautiful countryside – but it does raise the question: Can you even remember a sunny bank holiday weekend in Derbyshire?

Share your sunshine stories

Surely there must have been one or two? Maybe you braved the great outdoors with a family camping trip in Bakewell, or spent the entire weekend in the garden with a BBQ and a paddling pool? Maybe you had a blissful sunny picnic by Carsington Water or a lazy afternoon wandering around Matlock Bath in short sleeves.

Or were you one of the brave souls who set off for a hike in hope and returned soaked to the bone, clutching a collapsed tent and a soggy pork pie?

We’d love to hear your memories – good, bad, or just plain wet.

This weekend: make the most of it

Even if the weather’s not quite what we’d hoped for, Derbyshire has plenty to offer come rain or shine. From cosy country pubs and tea rooms, to walks that are just as beautiful under a moody sky, there’s no reason to stay cooped up indoors. Just maybe pack a coat… and a flask.
