Running is more than just putting one foot in front of the other — it’s a lifeline for many, a way to clear the mind, lift the mood, and feel part of something bigger. Now, Derbyshire Mind is looking for a motivated runner to help bring those benefits to even more people in our county.
After the success of their Rookie Runners programme at Derby Arena, led by the much-loved Chris and Gloria, Derbyshire Mind is expanding into South Derbyshire. They’re seeking someone who’s keen to train as a run leader — or who already holds a Leader in Running Fitness (LiRF) qualification — to guide a brand new 12-week beginners’ programme.
Running for Mental Wellbeing
The link between physical activity and mental health is well documented. Running releases endorphins, reduces stress, and can help combat symptoms of anxiety and depression. But beyond the science, there’s something powerful about the rhythm of your feet on the ground, the fresh air in your lungs, and the sense of freedom it brings.
For many, joining a running group is about more than fitness. It’s about connection — finding like-minded people, sharing achievements, and supporting each other through the tough miles and the triumphs. In a world where loneliness is increasingly recognised as a public health challenge, programmes like Rookie Runners can be a game-changer.
Why Derbyshire is the Perfect Place to Start
With its rolling hills, winding trails, canal paths, and peaceful parks, Derbyshire offers some of the most inspiring running routes in the country. Whether it’s a sunrise jog along the River Derwent, an energising loop through Shipley Country Park, or a steady climb in the Peak District, every run here comes with a side of natural beauty that lifts the soul as much as the heart rate.

Building Friendships and Community
Ask any past Rookie Runner and they’ll tell you — the friendships made along the way are as valuable as the miles logged. Running together builds trust, camaraderie, and mutual encouragement. You’re not just leading runs; you’re building a little community where everyone is welcome, no matter their pace.
Get Involved
If you’re a passionate runner who wants to give back, Derbyshire Mind would love to hear from you. You could become a volunteer run leader or a wellbeing volunteer, helping others to take those first steps toward a healthier, happier life.
