A new community group in Ripley is hoping to stitch people back together—literally and figuratively.
The Chat ‘n’ Craft Club Ripley is launching monthly sessions at the Coop café on Wednesday evenings, offering locals a chance to unwind with crafts, conversation, and a cuppa. Running from 5:30pm to 7:30pm, these welcoming gatherings aim to create a relaxed space where people can reconnect and build new friendships.
At just £5 per person, the sessions include all materials, refreshments, and even free car parking (just pop your car reg in at the café till). Whether you’re into knitting, card-making, or just need some time away from your phone, it’s a chance to make something with your hands—and leave with something in your heart.
But this is more than just a hobby club. It’s a gentle but powerful response to a growing issue in Derbyshire and beyond: loneliness.
Recent community studies have shown that many Derbyshire residents—particularly older people or those living alone—can go days without meaningful conversation. The cost-of-living crisis, post-Covid shifts, and the decline of local meeting spaces have all played a role in making people feel more isolated.
“It’s heartbreaking how many people feel invisible,” says one of the club’s organisers. “We wanted to create something simple but effective—a place where you can come just as you are and know someone will be glad to see you.”
The club is already drawing interest from across the area, with people of all ages and backgrounds planning to attend. It’s not about being a crafting expert—it’s about connection.
So if you’re feeling a little lost, or just fancy doing something different on a Wednesday night, come along. Bring a friend, or come alone and leave with one.
Don’t just grow—bloom.
💚 To join the Chat ‘n’ Craft Club Ripley, just turn up to the Coop café on the next scheduled Wednesday session. All are welcome.
