Belper Estates Left Stranded: Calls Grow for Better Bus Services
Residents of Belper Estates are becoming increasingly frustrated with the poor level of bus service connecting the area to the rest of the town and beyond. With only two buses an hour during peak times — and no service at all on Sundays — many feel isolated and let down.
The limited timetable is causing real problems not just for local people but also for Belper’s businesses. Restaurants, pubs, and shops rely on steady footfall to thrive, yet potential customers from Belper Estates often have no choice but to stay home or rely on expensive alternatives like taxis. For many, particularly the elderly, young people, and those without access to a car, this lack of transport effectively cuts them off.
“It’s ridiculous,” said one resident. “If you want to pop into town for a coffee or do a bit of shopping, you have to plan your entire day around when the bus is running — and if you miss one, it’s a long wait for the next. On Sundays, you’re stuck completely.” Never mind the hills to walk up, each estate is up a hill, you need oxygen if you live up Belper Lane.
There’s also the environmental cost to consider. Encouraging public transport use is a key part of tackling climate change, yet the current service does the opposite. With few bus options, more people are forced to drive, leading to more congestion, more pollution, and a missed opportunity to make Belper a truly green town.
Local businesses are feeling the pinch too. Several have said that the lack of accessible transport limits their customer base, especially on weekends when trade could be at its busiest.
Campaigners are now calling for urgent action. They want a more frequent and reliable service, including an hourly Sunday service at the very least, to reconnect Belper Estates with the heart of the town and support Belper’s economy and environment.
“It’s not just about convenience,” one local business owner said. “It’s about fairness, sustainability, and giving Belper the vibrant, connected community it deserves.”
If you agree that Belper Estates deserves better, now is the time to speak up. Contact your local councillor, spread the word, and help put pressure on the powers that be to bring about the change Belper needs.
