A new speed camera has recently been installed near Ford Lane in Allestree, Derbyshire, sparking renewed debate among residents about the role and prevalence of speed enforcement in the county. This addition is part of a broader initiative by the Derbyshire Police and Crime Commissioner, who, in collaboration with Derby City Council, has funded the deployment of re-deployable speed cameras at locations including Boulton Lane and Duffield Road in Derby. These cameras aim to address public concerns about speeding and have been placed based on historical collision data and community feedback.
The Case for More Cameras
Proponents of increased speed camera deployment argue that these devices are essential tools for enhancing road safety. For instance, the introduction of average speed cameras on the A52 between Pentagon Island and Spondon in February 2020 led to a significant reduction in accidents—from an average of 10.2 collisions per year to just 1.4. Additionally, compliance with the new 50 mph speed limit reached approximately 99.5% among drivers.
Supporters also highlight that revenue from speeding fines is reinvested into road safety measures across Derby and Derbyshire, benefiting the broader community. Moreover, the presence of speed cameras can deter dangerous driving behaviors, potentially saving lives. 
Concerns and Criticisms
On the other hand, some residents feel that Derbyshire already has an excessive number of speed cameras. In 2020-21, Derbyshire Constabulary recorded 19,789 speeding offences, with approximately 19% of these offences later cancelled. Reasons for cancellations included faulty or incorrectly calibrated cameras and administrative issues.
Critics argue that the proliferation of speed cameras may be more about revenue generation than safety. They also express concerns about the potential for unjust penalties, especially in cases where drivers are caught marginally over the speed limit or where signage is unclear.
