Where Did All the Love Locks from Bakewell Bridge Go?

Derbyshire.News investigates the mystery – and finds a rather heartwarming answer

For years, the bridge in Bakewell was more than just a way to cross the River Wye — it was a destination for lovers, friends, and tourists who sealed their bonds by attaching padlocks to its railings. Each lock, etched with initials or heartfelt messages, symbolised promises, memories, and milestones. But when the time came for vital maintenance and replacement of the bridge’s fencing, hundreds of people were left wondering: what happened to all those love locks?

Well, the good news is — they’re still here in Derbyshire.

The Love Locks Live On at Thornbridge Hall

If you’ve ever wandered through the gardens at Thornbridge Hall in Ashford-in-the-Water, you might have spotted a curious, gleaming installation tucked among the trees. It’s called Love Locker @ Thornbridge, and it’s home to hundreds of the original padlocks salvaged from Bakewell’s iconic bridge.

Lovingly arranged on custom frames and decorated with flowers and butterflies, the display is a vibrant tribute to the many people who left a piece of their story on the bridge. Whether your padlock marked a wedding, a new relationship, or a message to someone no longer with us, it might still be there — hanging on in a new home surrounded by the beauty of the Derbyshire countryside.

Why Was the Display Created?

When the bridge underwent renovation, the locks couldn’t remain in place due to structural concerns and conservation efforts. But rather than scrapping the collection, they were relocated with care and creativity to Thornbridge Hall — ensuring the memories they represent weren’t lost.

Now, not only do the locks remain accessible to the public, they’re part of a peaceful and reflective space where visitors can pause, remember, and maybe even add a new lock of their own.
