Corbyn endorses new political party for Derbyshire

Just days after announcing the launch of a new national political party, former Labour leader Jeremy Corbyn has endorsed a new party for Derbyshire.

And after half a million people have signed up to support the national party, thousands are expected to join the new party for Derbyshire following Jeremy Corbyns’ endorsement.

Derbyshire Community Independents is understood to be connected to the as yet unnamed national party, which it is believed is likely to have a federal structure and be made up from similar parties across the UK.

The new party was originally launched as the Belper Independents Party over 2 years ago and holding seats on Belper Town council and Amber Valley Borough council.

In a lengthy statement published on their social media the new party name and expansion was announced.

Under the working name ‘Your Party’ Corbyn and joint leader the popular left wing Coventry MP Zara Sultana are believed to be working on a structure which will encompass local ‘Community Independent’ parties across the UK.

In a letter of support to leader Cllr Ben Bellamy, who is known to be a close ally of the former Labour leader, Corbyn wrote:

“All the best with the launch of Derbyshire Community Independents.

We need voices to oppose the continued two child benefit cap and threats to PIP.

We need voices to oppose the awful levels of inequality and Austerity 2.0.

We need voices for peace and an end to the suffering of the Palestinian people”

When approached for comment, Cllr Bellamy said

“We only launched yesterday and yet we already are being overwhelmed by people signing up and wanting to set up local groups and stand for election under the Derbyshire Community Independents banner.

Under the umbrella of the new national party which is being formed, we will be based in our communities, looking after the local issues that affect us all.

Our playgrounds are shocking. We need to bring back youth clubs and community centres. We need to support our sports clubs.

We need the right homes in the right places, so families can stay and live in communities they grew up in, without the Greenbelt being sacrificed.

And we need councillors who will stand up for their areas properly, and know their own minds. Too often I look across the council chamber and it is clear that some councillors haven’t even read their papers and put their hands up in a vote to order.”
