Once facing the threat of closure, Belper Leisure Centre has undergone a remarkable transformation — and now stands as a shining example of community investment, resilience, and renewal.
Mid Derbyshire MP Jonathan Davies recently visited the site to see first-hand the results of an extensive refurbishment and to speak with the team behind its recovery — leisure operator Trilogy Active, which formally merged with Belper Leisure Centre Limited last year.
“It was fantastic to see the new facilities and meet with Trilogy representatives,” said Mr Davies. “This centre plays a vital role in the health and wellbeing of local residents, and the turnaround in its fortunes is a real success story.”

From Uncertainty to Stability
Just two years ago, the future of Belper Leisure Centre was hanging in the balance. Financial pressures and rising operational costs had left its future uncertain, sparking real concern in the local community.

Built in 1975, the leisure centre has long been a focal point for sport and fitness in Belper and the surrounding area, offering facilities for swimming, football, squash, badminton, indoor cycling, and more. Its dual role as a public leisure hub and school sports venue for Belper School meant its potential closure would have affected thousands of users.
But in 2023, the centre secured a much-needed lifeline through a merger with Trilogy Active — a social enterprise that operates other leisure sites across the country. The formal partnership not only safeguarded the future of the centre but also set the stage for a large-scale investment and modernisation programme.

A New Era of Facilities and Community Focus
As part of the refurbishment, the gym has seen a complete overhaul with new cardiovascular and strength training equipment, improved flooring, full redecoration, and upgraded changing rooms. Functional fitness areas, new classes, and enhanced adult and junior programmes have also been introduced.
“This merger has enabled greater financial stability, improved efficiency, and long-term planning,” said John Fletcher, Managing Director of Trilogy Active. “We’re now able to re-invest in the centre, support staff better, and expand what’s on offer to the community.”
During the visit, Jonathan Davies MP praised the team for their efforts and emphasised the importance of local leisure centres in public health strategy.
“Facilities like Belper Leisure Centre are not just places to exercise — they’re vital for long-term community wellbeing and play a key role in supporting the NHS,” he said. “By helping people stay active and healthy, we can reduce pressure on local healthcare services.”

Looking to the Future
Trilogy Active has pledged ongoing investment in Belper, and both the organisation and local MP are keen to ensure the centre remains accessible to residents for years to come.
“I look forward to continuing to work with Trilogy Active and Belper Leisure Centre to support these vital services,” Mr Davies added. “This is a great example of what can be achieved when community organisations and public representatives work together for the good of local people.”
Belper Leisure Centre is open seven days a week and continues to offer a wide range of classes, swim sessions, and sports opportunities for all ages and abilities.
