Dog rescue centres across Derbyshire are at capacity – and many are sounding the alarm. From Chesterfield to Derby and out to the Peak District, the message is the same: we’re full, and we desperately need people to adopt.
But why is this happening?
A Growing Crisis in Our Kennels
The numbers don’t lie. Derbyshire’s rescues are overflowing with dogs of all breeds, ages, and backgrounds. Kennels that were once used to taking in occasional strays or surrenders are now turning dogs away due to lack of space.
Claire, a volunteer at a rescue centre near Matlock, says:
“We’ve never seen anything like it. Every week we get new dogs in, and we can’t rehome them fast enough. People call us in tears asking us to take their dog, and we just can’t anymore.”
Where Are These Dogs Coming From?
There are two dominant theories.
One is the rise of backstreet breeders – people breeding dogs irresponsibly, often in poor conditions, with no regard for genetics, health, or temperament. These puppies may seem cute at first, but as they grow, many develop behavioural issues or health problems. Once the “puppy stage” is over and the problems begin, the dogs are dumped.
The second theory? Owner incompetence.
It’s harsh, but it’s true. Many people simply aren’t prepared for the responsibility of owning a dog. From lack of training to poor socialisation and underestimating the cost and time commitment, too many dogs are ending up in shelters through no fault of their own.
It’s not always deliberate neglect – sometimes it’s just naivety. But the result is the same: traumatised, confused dogs behind kennel doors waiting for someone to care.

A County Full of Love – But Not Enough Homes
Derbyshire loves its dogs. From dog-friendly pubs in Belper to weekend hikes in the Peaks, it’s a county that celebrates canine companions. But if we really love them, we have to step up now.
If you’re looking to welcome a dog into your home, please consider adopting instead of buying.
There are several reputable rescue centres across Derbyshire, including:
• Ashbourne Animal Welfare (The Ark)
• Just for Dogs, Brailsford
• RSPCA Derby
• Almost Home Dog Rescue, North Wingfield
• Dogs Trust Loughborough (just over the border – still helping Derbyshire dogs)
• Chesterfield Animal Rescue
Each one is filled with good boys and girls who need a second chance.

Is the problem breeders or owners?
“It’s likely both,”
“Backyard breeders are a serious issue, flooding the market with poorly bred dogs. But without proper education and support for new dog owners, even well-bred dogs can end up abandoned. The solution? Better regulation, and a cultural shift toward adoption and responsible pet ownership.”
Hard to argue with that.
Where Would You Get a Dog From?
If you’ve got experience with any Derbyshire dog rescues – or a happy ending adoption story – we’d love to hear from you. Send your photos, stories, or rescue centre recommendations to clare@derbyshire.news, and let’s celebrate the people giving dogs a second chance.
In the meantime, let’s share this message far and wide: Adopt, don’t shop. Derbyshire’s dogs need us.
