Derbyshire GP Surgeries: Lifeline or Letdown?

Let’s talk about something that gets under a lot of people’s skin—trying to get a doctor’s appointment in Derbyshire. For some, it’s become the modern version of a gladiator battle: a frantic, redial-fuelled dash at exactly 8am, armed with hope, patience, and a decent phone signal. But more often than not, you’re met with a robotic voice calmly informing you: “You are number 23 in the queue.”

By the time you get through, all the appointments are gone—and no, they can’t pre-book for next week either. You’ll need to try again tomorrow. And the day after that. For those in pain, suffering with mental health, or trying to get help for a child, this system isn’t just frustrating—it’s distressing.

Of course, it’s not all bad. Some surgeries do manage things well. You might be lucky enough to be registered at a practice where the reception staff are helpful, you can use an online booking system, or even get a call-back from a doctor the same day. And credit where it’s due—the NHS is under immense pressure, and GPs are doing their best with limited resources.

But should patients have to fight this hard just to be seen?

Derbyshire residents are telling us they’re losing faith. Some avoid going altogether. Others head to A&E for things that a GP should be dealing with—because it’s the only way to get seen. And then we wonder why hospitals are overwhelmed.

So we’re asking: Does your Derbyshire GP surgery work for you? Or is it a postcode lottery of pain and redial buttons?

Have you got a horror story—or a positive one? We want to hear it. Share your views below, and let’s find out what’s really happening behind those busy phone lines and long waiting lists.
