Staveley’s Canal Basin Transformed: “The Moorings” Ushers In a New Era

 “The Moorings”

A wave of anticipation is sweeping through Staveley as The Moorings — a stunning two‑storey waterside development — is now complete at the town’s canal basin. Led by Derbyshire County Council in partnership with the Staveley Town Deal, this project is part of a £25 million Government-backed regeneration programme.

The Moorings brings 11 flexible business units to life — six on the first floor sized between 450 and 750 sq ft, and ground‑floor retail and leisure spaces, including a restaurant or café‑bar with outdoor seating overlooking the canal. A new access road and footpath now lead visitors right into the heart of this vibrant new hub.

Potential Boon for Tourism and Local Economy

Projections suggest the development will create 40 to 60 new jobs, boosting the local economy and drawing visitors to the Chesterfield Canal area. By enhancing the canal setting, increasing amenities, and improving access, The Moorings positions itself as both a local destination and a magnet for greater footfall from nearby areas.

Local leaders are optimistic. Cabinet Member for Economic Development and Regeneration, Councillor Rob Reaney, highlighted that The Moorings will serve “as a fantastic waterside destination for both local people and visitors to enjoy” and noted strong interest already from businesses looking to locate there. Ivan Fomin, Chair of the Staveley Town Deal Board, added that this landmark project embodies the vision of a town where “everyone can start, stay, and grow”.

This initiative is also part of the wider Markham Vale programme, a sprawling 85-hectare business park resurrecting the former Markham Colliery site — further embedding Staveley within the region’s economic resurgence.

Will It Draw Tourists? – Yes, With One Caveat

With its scenic canal-side ambience, added dining, and cycling and walking-friendly infrastructure, The Moorings is well-placed to attract new visitors. Whether it’s families on leisurely walks, cyclists stopping for a scenic bite, or boat lovers docking by the café — there’s real potential.

Yet turning this potential into reality will require active promotion, engaging tenants, and ensuring accessibility. If local businesses and tourism partners embrace the opportunity, Staveley could enjoy a fresh wave of visitor interest.

This development signifies more than bricks and mortar — it’s about revitalising Staveley’s identity. A vibrant canal-side, new jobs, and fresh social spaces could help reinvigorate pride in the town and attract a new generation of residents and visitors alike.
